Wine Wednesdays - Ramey 2010 Chardonnay

Up this week, Ramey 2010 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay.  Another remnant of my time at home; this wine was enjoyed at Zin restaurant in Healdsburg.  Mom surprised me with a girls trip, more on that for another post.  She had spent her recent birthday with her girlfriends in Healdsburg, they had dinner at Zin, and I sent them a bottle of Ramey with love from NYC.  I guess the wine, the food, and the experience were so great she had to recreate it with me, and I was happy to go along!

The wine was delicious.  Light and well balanced, not too much oak.  It paired perfectly with our shared plates of fish and duck.

Ramey does tastings 2x per day but unfortunately was booked during our weekend, definitely something to go back for!

Wine Wednesdays - 2011 Flowers Chardonnay

Happy Wednesday!  We're covered in snow in NYC, is it spring yet??

This week we're reviewing Flowers 2011 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay.  I know there's a facet of wine-drinkers out there known for believing in the mantra "ABC" (anything but Chardonnay) but as you've probably heard me mention, chardonnay is my mom's favorite varietal, was once a consideration for my first name (no joke) and is obviously the name-sake of this here blog.  So needless to say, I'm a chardonnay fan.  And sometimes I wish people would give chardonnay more of a chance before immediately writing it off.

Case in point, this Flowers Chardonnay.  I first had it while dining out at Bobo back in November and was immediately a fan.  Laura, my dining companion, knew the label for both their chardonnay and pinot.

I love this label for it's simplicity and bottle shape, the wine itself is a beautiful golden color.  The nose is full of bright citrus and a hint of vanilla, balanced with a mid-palette of crisp apple.  Considering this wine was aged in 100% French oak, it was not overly oaky.

I would highly recommend this wine for a special occasion, we paired ours on my last night at home with yummy leftover cheese and charcuterie which may not be so special but was perfect none-the-less.

Highlights from Home

Happy Friday!  Two weeks later and I feel like I'm just settling in to being back in NY, isn't January supposed to be a quiet and restful month?!?!  At least we have a 3 day weekend, those first full weeks back have been brutal.

My favorite visitor just showed up on my doorstep (hi Mom) for a family friend's Bar Mitzvah this weekend.  So we'll be playing/eating/drinking/shopping around the NY area.

As I continue to catch up….below are a few more highlights from my time at home.

The manzanita tree we cut at Thanksgiving all dressed up at night!

Gorgeous Christmas table with Grandma and Papa watching over us

Too much wine!

Don't let the picture fool you, this wine bottle was the equivalent of 4 bottles!

Lots of hiking and time spent outdoors…it was 70 degrees the entire time!

Wine Wednesdays - Rococo Pinot Gris

I'm cutting it down to the wire here as it's almost Thursday in NYC….busy busy week!

While at home I managed to visit Farmstead, my hands down favorite restaurant, multiple times, discovering for the first time their amazing grower's happy hour.  From 4-6pm a great selection of wines, beers, cocktails and nibbles are $5!!  Such a deal.

On one night in particular, we decided on the 2012 Rococo Pinot Gris to accompany our pulled pork nachos (OMG).  I was immediately drawn to the cool label, but the wine was great as well.  Classic, smooth, well balanced Pinot Gris but rounded out by a blend of Riesling and Gewurtzraminer; which gave it a rich creamy taste without being overly sweet.

Wine Wednesdays - Spring Mountain Tasting

Happy New Year!  I hope everyone had a fabulous holiday.  I'm sorry for the lapse in posts, I was having too much fun in the California sunshine to spend any time inside on my computer.  I figured I'd start at the end and work my way backwards….on my last day at home we spent the day tasting on Spring Mountain.  We visited Guilliams and Sherwin, from "garagiste" to the "American dream" it was a gorgeous day filled with yummy wine.

First stop was Guilliams Vineyards.  I must admit the thought of tasting red wine starting at 10:30am was a little much, even for me, but these wines were delicious.  Smooth, well balanced, ripe fruit balanced by a minimum 2 years barrel aging in 40% new French Oak.  Best of all was the intimate tasting experience, what I like to call "garagiste" wine-making, or wine-making out of a garage.  Proof that you don't need the fanciest equipment or tasting room, but a beautiful view and good wine on a sunny day do just fine.  My favorite was the 2009 Merlot.  I'm generally more of a Cab fan, but this Merlot was tasty!

We finished tasting at Guilliams and headed up the mountain to Sherwin Family Vineyards.  We had a fabulous picnic lunch in the sun and continued to taste.  My favorite here was the 2007 Dry Creek Syrah.  It was a beautiful dark garnet color, with tastes of ripe black fruit, and smooth tannins that led to a long smooth finish.

Sherwin Vineyards is the only American Winery with the Federal approval to place an image of the American flag on a wine bottle. The commemorative bottles were born out of an effort to raise money in the wake of September 11th and has been a collectible item ever since.

This guy had a little too much to drink!
We were supposed to make a final stop at Barnett Vineyards but we ran out of time.  As we say, best to leave something for next time!  I made my way to the Evan's Airporter with rosy cheeks, sad to leave but grateful for such a wonderful time at home!
